This painting is inspired by the Mafrāj (مفراج), a room on the very top of multi-story houses in Yemen. In the early evenings, family and friends gather there to relax from the day. Sometimes sounds of an Oud (عود), an Arabian lute underline the scene while the sun slowly sinks into the horizon.
My Secret Garden is inspired by Maurice Denis' 'Encounter', painted ca 1892 (see picture below). Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was a French post impressionist painter and a member of the movement 'les nabis'. Driven by his strict Catholicism, especially Denis' later paintings are loaded with Christian symbolism.
I love the clear lines of 'la rencontre', however, prefer to translate Denis' content into a more universal, dreamlike scene, where no particular religion is determinant but an open door lures the viewer into a secret garden that calls for discovery.
