Field Notes from the Cultural Apothecary

The Billabong King

The Billabong King

Along a windswept coast, where tall grasses bend and fences trace the edges of human order, a white table stands draped in linen. Chairs wait neatly arranged, as if for a gathering. Upon the table lies a saltwater crocodile - the Billabong King - his scaled body gleaming beneath a vast, spectacular sky.

The scene feels both ceremonial and absurd: nature invited, conquered, displayed. It asks the silent question that hums beneath our rituals of comfort and control - from farm to table, eat or be eaten?

In this meeting of beauty and disquiet, the horizon itself seems to hesitate - between feast and offering, dominion and surrender.

Wild Piglet

A soft Provençal light drifts through trees of green and gold - perhaps olive trees, their leaves trembling in the summer air. Beneath them stretches a sea of lavender, its violet fragrance almost visible, rippling like perfume across the land.

In the midst of this fragrance calm, two armchairs rest among the blooms. On one of them, a small wild piglet has settled in, fast asleep - a visitor from another world, out of place yet perfectly at home.

Wild Piglet captures the quiet moment when nature trespasses gently into human order, turning beauty itself into an invitation.

Fennec Fox

Summer lingers in the air - the grass pale with heat, scattered with the last small blooms. Trees with long, hanging branches cast shifting shadow over the scene. Beneath one of them stands a pale blue armchair, its fabric faded by the light.

Curled upon it sleeps a fennec fox, its vast ears pricked to the world. Around it, everything seems to hum - leaves, air, the faint vibration of silence becoming sound.

Fennec Fox is a meditation on listening: that still, electric moment when the world gathers its breath, and even quiet becomes music.

Little Zebra

In a quiet room, a couch waits before a wall that opens like a window into another world. Through the patterned wallpaper, Africa shimmers - an acacia tree standing against the horizon, clouds gathering above distant green.

On the couch sits a zebra, calm and composed, its gaze meeting the viewer’s with quiet curiosity. It seems both guest and guardian, at home and elsewhere.

Little Zebra reflects on the spaces between worlds - between interior and landscape, dream and waking, day and night, black and white.

Neither one nor the other, it simply is: a creature of balance, stillness, and gentle paradox.
